Sun
Meadow Resort is in the beautiful Idaho panhandle, with large
lakes surrounded by national forests. The lakeside city of
Coeur d'Alene is 35 miles north of Sun Meadow. Spokane, Washington
is 40 miles northwest and western Montana is a short drive
east on I-90. Coeur d'Alene Lake, and Chatcolet Lake, which
is surrounded by 5,505 acre Heyburn State Park (plus 2,333
acres of water) are just a few miles east of Sun Meadow. Visitors
can go boating, waterskiing, sailing, canoeing, kayaking,
and fishing. Daily cruises on the "Idaho" include
scenic interpretive information, luncheon, and sunset dinner cruises.
There are also many fine golf courses in the vicinity.
The
Trail of the Coeur d'Alenes is a new 71 mile rails-to-trails
bicycle path opened in 2003 near Sun Meadow
Resort. Starting near Montana, it passes through Heyburn State
Park. Just south of this trail is the Hiawatha
Rail-Trail, a 46 mile route winding through 11 tunnels
and over 9 high steel trestles. It crosses the rugged Bitterroot
Mountains between Idaho and Montana. The trail includes the
1.8 mile St Paul Pass tunnel. You'll need a bike light or
headlamp to ride through this tunnel. The Hiawatha Rail-Trail
runs from Pearson, Idaho to St. Regis, Montana, which is on
I-90.
You can raft the Coeur d'Alene River. Further north is Lake
Pend Oreille, the largest lake in Idaho. The rustic artist
community of Sandpoint is located at its forested northern
edge.
Winter
exists in the Pacific Northwest, and Sun Meadow offers recreational
opportunities to match the weather. World-class skiing is
available at Schweitzer (near Sandpoint), and at Silver Mountain,
36 miles east of Coeur d'Alene, near Kellogg, Idaho. Tubing,
ice bocce, and croquet can be
enjoyed on Sun Meadow's frozen pond. You can cross-country
ski Sun Meadow's trails, even nude sometimes on sunny winter
days.
